What is Academic Writing?

This new page gives a definition of academic writing, as well as outlining the main features of academic writing, namely that it is structured, evidenced, critical, precise, balanced, objective and formal.

While the information was fresh in my mind, I created a YouTube video on the same topic (also comes with a worksheet, more on which below).

YouTube video worksheets

I've developed worksheets for use with the EAP Foundation YouTube videos. The worksheets can be used by students independently or by teachers in the classroom. Each worksheet comes with separate answers/lesson plan document, with activities taking 30-60 minutes for each 10 minute video. I've trialled them in class. They work really well!

In case you missed it... reporting verbs video

The previous YouTube video was for reporting verbs in academic writing. Reporting verbs are verbs such as state, argue, discuss and report and are used when citing other writer's work or ideas.
